Western Red Cedar is the most popular outdoor wood for a number of reasons.
Dimensional stability, decay resistance and workability are a few of the reasons Cedar has long been a favorite among contractors when building outdoor structures.
Rough sawn tight knot cedar grades are the most common but Western Red Cedar is also available in clear grades which contain very few knots and are usually planed for a smooth finish.
Remember that rough cedar will take a stain better than smooth cedar so you will have less maintenance if you choose rough sawn over smooth textured cedar.
