Is Bamboo for Decking a Good Choice?

When it comes to decking materials, there are a lot of options to choose from. You can go with traditional wood, composite materials, or even bamboo.

So, what’s the best choice for you? Is bamboo a good option for decking? Here’s what you need to know.

Strong and Durable

Bamboo’s strength comes from its unique composition. The plant is actually grass, not wood, and it has a cellular structure that is very similar to wood.

This makes it strong and durable, able to withstand heavy foot traffic and harsh weather conditions.

Although bamboo may dent or scratch more easily than some hardwoods, it is still a strong and durable material that can withstand heavy use.

High Stability

Unlike wood, bamboo will not shrink or swell with changes in moisture or temperature. This makes it an ideal choice for areas that experience extreme weather conditions.

Bamboo’s high stability is also evident in its resistance to insects and rot.  Because it is so versatile, bamboo is also used for siding and ceiling materials as well as decking.

Natural Look

Bamboo has a natural look that can complement any home style. Bamboo can also be stained or sealed to create a custom look.

Not only does bamboo look good, but it feels good, too. Bamboo is smooth and silky to the touch, making it comfortable to walk on barefoot.

Eco-Friendly

Bamboo is one of the most sustainable resources on the planet. It grows quickly and does not require pesticides or fertilizers to thrive. Once harvested, bamboo can be regrown from the same root system, making it a renewable resource.

No Visible Fastening

When done correctly, bamboo decking can have a clean, seamless look. The boards can be installed without visible fasteners, giving your deck a smooth, finished appearance. This is especially important if you plan to use your deck for entertaining.

Disadvantages of Using Bamboo for Decking

Cost

Bamboo is more expensive than many types of wood. However, it is still less expensive than some composite decking materials.

Installation

Bamboo decking must be installed correctly to achieve the desired look and performance. If not installed properly, the decking can warp or crack.

Relatively Heavy

Bamboo is a strong material, but it is also heavier than some other decking materials. This translates to a higher shipping cost and even higher installation costs if you hire a professional.

If you’re looking for a sustainable, durable, and eco-friendly decking material, bamboo might be the right choice for you.

You should also be aware that not all bamboo is created equal. There are two types of bamboo to choose from: solid and engineered.

Solid bamboo is just what it sounds like: one solid piece of bamboo. It is the more traditional type of bamboo and is typically less expensive.

Engineered bamboo is made up of layers of bamboo that are glued and pressed together. This type of bamboo is more stable and less likely to warp or crack. It is also more expensive.

  1. I like that you said that in contrast to wood, bamboo does not expand or contract in response to variations in humidity or temperature. My husband is planning to establish a deck in our house to add a space where our visitors can hang out this coming holiday. I’ll make sure to recommend the use bamboo for decking as it’s more durable than any materials, thanks!
